Using this website
This website is run by Bootle Parish Council. We want as many people as possible to be able to use it. That means you should be able to:
change colours, contrast levels and fonts
zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
Every page starts with a “Skip to content” link, and the accessibility toolbar on the left-hand side of every page lets you make the text larger, switch to a high-contrast view or change to a dyslexia-friendly font without installing anything.
We have also made the website text as simple as possible to understand. AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
We test this website in the current versions of Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox and Safari.
How accessible this website is
We believe this website meets the WCAG 2.2 AA standard in full. It was last tested on 11 October 2026 and nothing was found that fails those standards. The section below explains how we tested it, and what we do about the documents we have to publish as signed PDFs.

Minutes, agendas, audits and financial returns are also published as the signed PDFs the council is required to keep as its record. A scanned signature page cannot be read by a screen reader, so every document is published together with a web page carrying the same content, and that web page is the accessible version. Nothing on this website is available only as a PDF. If you would rather have any document in another format, ask the Clerk and we will send it.
What we are doing to improve accessibility
On some pages a small amount of content — footer buttons and links, for example — sits outside the page's landmark regions, and on a few pages two landmarks share the same name. Automated tools flag these as best practice rather than as WCAG 2.2 AA failures, and we are correcting them as the page templates are updated.
We test this website against WCAG 2.2 AA and fix what we find. The last test was on 11 October 2026.
Every new document is published with an accessible web page alongside the original file, and documents are checked before they go live.
We act on any accessibility problem a visitor reports to us, and we review this statement at least once a year.

How we tested. Every page on the website was crawled — 150 pages — and 25 of them, chosen to cover the home page, councillors, agendas, minutes, finance, policies, news, notices, the contact page and this statement, were tested against the WCAG 2.2 A and AA success criteria with axe-core. Alongside that we checked, by hand and in a browser: every link on the site; the skip link and the order the keyboard moves in; that nothing focused is hidden behind the cookie banner; the page landmarks and heading order; image alternative text; form labels; the size and spacing of links and buttons; that the site reflows at a 320 pixel width without scrolling sideways; and that text spacing can be increased without losing content. We also confirmed that every document published as a PDF has a web page carrying the same content.
